‘What do you see when you look into the mirror?’

When you look into the mirror

What do you see?

A reflection of your old self?

Or promises of what you could become

When you look into the mirror?

Who do you see?

A face you identify as yours?

Or a stranger…

One who is completely new to you

Some wish to become someone

Or Something

Something… new

Someone other than who they see in the mirror

They Agonize

They Wish

They Pray

Hoping to escape their reality

Like trying to hide from a dark past

One filled with pain and resentment

One many have experienced

Years filled with loss

Years filled with tears

One’s nightmare brought to life

What do you want to see…

When you look into that mirror

Constantly checking to see a change

A change in the mirror?

In your reflection?

Or… a change in the person

You stare

But the face staring back

Its a completely different one

Different from your perception?

Different from the imagery they’ve gotten so used to

Living in their own dream fantasy

Afraid to embrace their scars

Like an endless reminder of all the loss

A loss we’ve all shared

Some choose to break down

To ball up in the corner

To engulf oneself in misery

Others?

They choose to get back up

To Change…

Change what they see in the mirror

Change who they see in that mirror

What many fail to realize is that

That mirror,

Is just a reflection of your true self

Staring Right Back at Them

One we have to embrace

With all the hurt

The pain is what builds us up

Resilience to fight on

To live another day

Hopeful, of what may come

  1. This is so true as we try all the time to run away from reality. Sometimes I stare at the image in the mirror and I see the wrinkles, I try to see a younger me but I fail to see the wisdom that came with age. I fail to see that I am fearfully and wonderfully made and that beauty is within and flows to the outside. We should try to see who God created us to be no matter what we are going through. We are fearfully and wonderfully made. We are somebody.
